I'll be the first to admit that it was Nirvana in about 7th grade or so that got me into bands like Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth, and then things just sort of went from there. These pseudo-punk or pseudo-indie bands, if you will, are much more likely to draw a kid into the punk or indie underground than something like Christina Aguliera or Puddle of Mudd. Those bands (although not anymore really) do have ties to "the scene" from back in the day. I could go on and on, but I agree with Jim Ward on the "baby food to meat and potatoes" comment.
